Meghety Manoyan Valedictorian Speech - Class of 2017

Հոգեշնորհ Հայրեր,

Պատուարժան հոգաբարձութիւն,

Յարգելի տնօրէնուհի,
Շատ սիրելի ծնողներ, ուսուցիչներ, եւ դասընկերներ,

Օրերով մտածած եմ, թէ ի՞նչ պիտի ըսեմ ձեզի: Ինչպէ՞ս ամփոփեմ այն բոլոր զգացումները, որ կ՛ուզեմ արտայայտել Մանուկեան Վարժարանէն ներս իմ տարիներուս մասին:

Նոր միջավայր, նոր դէմքեր, հին ընկերներ, նոր ընկերներ, պահանջկոտ դասեր, մարտահրաւէրներ, եւ մեզ մտերմացնող պտոյտներ:

Ասոնք միայն քանի մը դրուագներ են երկրորդական վարժարանի կեանքէս: Մեր դասարանը, 53 աշակերտներով, իմ հետս կիսած է այդ զգացումները, անցած է վերիվայրումներէն, ճամբորդած է աշխարհի միւս ծայրը, եւ այսօր կանգնած է իբրեւ ՀԲԸՄ Վաչէ եւ Թամար Մանուկեան Երկրորդական Վարժարանի 10րդ աւարտական խումբը:

Սիրելի դասընկերնե'ր...

Չորս տարիներու ընթացքին, յոգնած ենք դասերէն եւ երբեմն, մեր կարգին, յոգնեցուցած ենք մեր ուսուցիչները: Կը յիշեմ 9րդ դասարանի առաջին օրերը, երբ դպրոցը կը թուէր իբրեւ օտար քաղաք մը, եւ շուարած դէմքերով կը փնտռէինք մեր դասարանները: Այսօր, անոր բոլոր անկիւնները ծանօթ են մեզի եւ ամէն սենեակ հարազատ է մեր սրտերուն: Ապագան հիմա մեր ափերուն մէջն է, եւ կասկած չունիմ, որ մենք պիտի հարստացնենք գաղութը փաստաբաններով, բժիշկներով, երկրաչափերով, բեմադրիչներով, եւ ինչու չէ՝ նախագահով մը... կամ՝ նախագահուհիով: Կարելիութիւնները անհամար են... Սակա'յն, մեր առաքելութիւնը ո'չ միայն բարեկեցիկ կեանք ապահովել է, այլ նաեւ՝ պաշտպանները ըլլալ Հայ Դատին ու պատիւ բերել մեր դպրոցին:

          Քանի մը օր առաջ, ամերիկացի բժիշկ Թոմ Քաթենան, Օրորա մրցանակը ստացաւ Սուտանի մէջ կատարած իր անձնա-զոհութեան եւ ծառայութիւններուն համար: Եթէ օտա'րը օտարին իր կեանքը զոհելու գնով կ՛օգնէ, մենք հիմա պատրաստ պէտք է որ ըլլանք եւ ներքուստ պէտք է երդուինք որ հոգատար պահապանները դառնանք մեր ժողովուրդին, մեր հայրենիքին, մեր սիրելի Արցախին, հետեւելով՝ Բարեգործականի սկզբունքներուն:

Պիտի կարօտնամ մեր կատակները, մեր դասարանային երկարատեւ ժողովները, եւ մանաւանդ անցեալ տարուան նախագահական ընտրութիւններու հետեւանքով, մեր բարեկամական, եւ երբեմն սուր վիճաբանութիւնները: Եւ անշուշտ պիտի կարօտնանք շինարարութեան ձայներն ու պատճառած ցնցումները, որոնց շնորհիւ այսօր կը վայելենք այս գեղեցիկ սրահը:

Սիրելինե'ր,

Երախտապարտ եմ նախ՝ Աստուծոյ, որ մեզի տուած է բազմաթիւ օրհնութիւններ: Երախտապարտ եմ Հայկական Բարեգործական Ընդհանուր Միութեան եւ Վաչէ եւ Թամար Մանուկեաններուն, որոնք կերտեցին այս հայապահպանման ջերմ օճախը. Երախտապարտ եմ հոգաբարձութեան, որոնց ջանքերով է, որ մեր վարժարանը կը յառաջանայ: Շնորհակալութիւն ծնողներուս, որոնք առաջին օրէն զիս ղրկած են հայկական վարժարան: Շնորհակալութիւն կը յայտնեմ վարժարանի անձնակազմին եւ բոլոր ուսուցիչներուն եւ վերջապէս՝ Դոկտ. Մովսիսեանին, որ միշտ յատուկ տեղ մը պիտի ունենայ մեր սրտերուն մէջ:

Այս դպրո'ցը,

մեր բոլորին ուսումնական ապագան դրած է հաստատ հիմքերու վրայ:

Այս դպրո'ցը,

այն վայրն է, ուր մենք ծաղկեցանք՝ պատանիներ էինք, բայց հիմա դարձանք կազմաւորուած երիտասարդ-երիտասարդուհիներ:

Այս դպրո'ցը,

զարգացուցած է հայրենասիրութիւնս, եւ ներշնջած է զիս, որ բաժինս բերեմ հայրենիքիս բարգաւաճման ջանքերուն: Ես կը զգամ, թէ ունիմ պէտք եղած պատրաստուածութիւնը, որ վերադառնալով  իմ արմատներուս, ներդրում կատարեմ Հայաստանին եւ Արցախին, թէ գիտելիքներովս եւ թէ՝ փորձառութիւններովս: Կ'երազեմ մանկաբուժութիւն ուսանիլ, բժշկական առաքելութեամբ յաճախ ճամբորդել Հայաստան եւ օգնել իմ հայրենի քոյրերուն եւ եղբայրներուն, անոնց մատուցել բժշկական ծառայութիւն:

Կը շնորհաւորեմ 2017ի շրջանաւարտ ընկերներս ու կը մաղթեմ նորանոր յաջողութիւններ: Ասիկա բաժանում չէ, այլ ցտեսութիւն մինչեւ մեր յաջորդ հանդիպումը:

John Tabakian Salutatorian Speech - Class of 2017

Reverend fathers; honorable board members and guests; dear faculty and staff; parents, family, and friends,

My name is John Tabakian, or simply Hovig, and I am your Salutatorian. I have had the privilege of attending AGBU Vatche and Tamar Manoukian High School for four years, and as Ms. Gohar stated, the honor of pursuing my passion of Mechanical Engineering at UCLA starting this fall.

But enough about me… today we celebrate us: The AGBU MHS Class of 2017: a class made up of 53 young adults all about to embark on the next chapter of our lives. But as Dr. M would always preach, you can’t study the next chapter without reviewing the last one first.

Four years ago, we entered through the gates of AGBU MHS. We immediately were introduced to Vlad, the lovable security guard; Baron Assilian, a man with more keys than actual doors on campus; Digin Sepetjian, a science teacher who, because of my older sister, already had crazy high expectations of me; Baron Zareh, the math teacher who we all knew was secretly a chess grandmaster; Baron Dadurian and Oryort Lora, who would later become our parents away from home; the one of a kind (at the time) Ms. M.; as well as countless others, and many more over the years.

We made memories together and conquered 9th grade, one of the most fun years of my life. Then came Sophomore year… one of the most rigorous academically, where we discovered our hidden talent of operating without sleep, and the pain associated with trying to manage Mr. Wiebe’s endless handouts.

Next came Junior year, and with it, the realization that it is impossible to not get sick immediately before taking an SAT. That year concluded with us embarking on the one and only Armenia trip.

            You never really get to know a group of 53 people until you travel to another country with them for 2 weeks. Together we walked around Yerevan, ate Toumanian Shawerma (which for any Juniors here is kind of over-rated), and shared some powerful, emotional moments. I personally will never forget breaking down in tears at Dzidzernagapert—an unforgettable experience that made clear to me what it means to be Armenian. After the 14 day trial by fire, we emerged a family: the Seniors who still can’t decide between Malibu and Huntington; the Seniors who helped finally bring banners to the school gym; the Seniors who survived Mr. Robinson and Mr. Flores; the Seniors who can not wait to get out there and make you all proud; the Seniors who make up the AGBU MHS Class of 2017.

We may not know what this next chapter holds, but one thing holds true: there will be obstacles in our way—times where our dreams and aspirations may seem impossible to achieve. During high school, we got a brief glimpse of the trials that both academia and normal life can throw at us, but Carnegie Mellon University Computer Science Professor, Disney Imagineer, and one of my personal heros, Randy Pausch said it best: There are obstacles in life “for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something.”

We all know life is tough. But, I know without a doubt that every one of you is going places. We just have to promise to keep fighting, to never give up, and to remember that everything happens for a reason. We will always remain a united Spartan family, and in tough times, who can you turn to but your family?

            My final remark to my fellow graduates: “Just do it.” I love you guys. Thank you!

Meet Mrs. Markarian

This semester, AGBU MHS gained a new English teacher, Mrs. Anoush Markarian. She got her B.A. in English at Notre Dame University of Lebanon. She also has an M.A. in Adult Education from Columbus University and an M.A. in TESOL from NYU. She received her Teaching Business English Certificate from London Chamber of Commerce. Mrs. Markarian has always liked teaching, reading, and writing. She says, “I was always good in my English classes, and that’s when I felt I wanted to do this for a living; I lived in Lebanon and wanted to teach it as a second language.” She hopes that her students can look forward to learning and discovering something new, are very active in class, and refer to her as a mentor. She feels most rewarded when she sees students improving.

Here are a couple of fun facts about Mrs. Markarian. Her favorite author is William Shakespeare and she really enjoys Romeo and Juliet. She is very excited about Pierce Brown’s Red Rising becoming a movie. Her sophomores are presently reading that novel. Mrs. Markarian also stated that one of her hobbies is teaching her kids and that if she were not a teacher, she would be working in the medical field as a pediatrician.

Now, for the quirky questions. We asked Mrs. Markarian where she would travel if she could go anywhere in the world. She said, “Lebanon, because I have family there and my heart is there.” When asked about eating any type of food for the rest of her life, she said she would choose sushi or any seafood.

Interview With Mr. Ghoogasian

Mr. Ghoogasian decided to come to AGBU MHS because he thinks it will be really cool to teach Armenian students as his first full-time teaching job. He is our new History teacher and will be taking over the classes formerly taught by our Principal, Dr. Movsisyan. He graduated from UCLA and enjoyed his experience very much; he encourages students to attend if they can. Mr. Ghoogasian desires to encourage class participation in order for students to get engaged in History.

Mr.Ghoogasian’s favorite topic in history is learning about the Middle East and conversing with his friends about it. He majored in history because he was fascinated by an Armenian history class he took. When asked whom in history he would like to be, Mr. Ghoogasian stated that Eugene V. Debs had a great vision for America and even ran for president while in prison. “I thought that was really cool,” said Mr.Ghoogasian. When asked whom he would hate to be, Mr. Ghoogasian stated that King Leopold II was one of the cruelest criminals in history; he hates that guy.

Get to know AGBU MHS Chef, Caroline Krikorian

On inspiration to become a chef:

I have been cooking most of my life with my mother.  As a young girl at the age of seven, I always enjoyed helping my mother in the kitchen. My mother was the first person to notice my passion and talent when it came to cooking and she always motivated me to follow my dreams.  I decided to become a chef.

On being a chef at AGBU MHS:

I still work for other private organizations. I do other business such as food catering. I saw AGBU as an opportunity to come here and cook. I think this lunch system with the computer makes the line go by very fast. It makes it easier for everyone to keep track of past purchases and prices.  

I really enjoy the students here. I enjoy being a chef at AGBU MHS. It's an honor serving the Armenian community. The students, faculty, and overall environment has made me feel like family. The feeling of being appreciated has made me love my job. I am glad every individual is satisfied with my work; I can't wait to share more with all of you!

On pastimes and the future:

I enjoy swimming and dancing on my free time. I also enjoy reading and spending time with family during off days. I am also working on an Armenian cook book full of great recipes passed down from generations.  It will also have my own dishes I want to share with the Armenian community. I believe our culture's dishes are so rich in flavor and should be passed down to all  upcoming generations in order to keep our Armenian identity.

Would you choose to live forever if you had the chance?

Interesting question!Yes, I would definitely want to live forever if I had the chance. Sometimes I feel life is way too short.   Life is a beautiful gift regardless of any circumstances, and if you are surrounded by the right people who love and care for you, life becomes precious. I still feel 16 at heart!

Քրիսչըն Ասատուրեան - Ամէն ընտանիք տարբեր ձեւով կ'ընկալէ «պատիւ» հասկացողութիւնը: Հօրս դաստիարակութեան համաձայն՝ պատիւը միայն դրամի հարց չէ, այլ՝ հաւատարմութիւն եւ յարգանք է:

Շատ դժուար է «Պատիւ»ը պահպանելը. շատ դիւրին է «Պատիւ» ը կորսնցնելը. բայց ամէնէն դժուարն է «Պատիւ» ը բարձր պահելը:

Շանթ Մինասեան - «Պատիւ»ը այն համբաւն ու բարի անունն է, որ կը հաւաքուի տարիների ընթացքին: Պատիւը կը կազմաւորուի տարբեր միջավայրերում ինչպէս ընտանեկան, ընկերային եւ դպրոցական: Մենք պատասխանատու ենք ամէն մի արարքի համար որ արժեւորում է «Պատիւ» հասկացողութիւնը:

Յովիկ Թապաքեան – Ամէն սկաուտ, իր առաջին բանակումի վերջաւորութեան երդում կու տայ եւ իր «Պատւոյն վրայ» կը խոստանայ հնազանդիլ օրէնքներուն: Ես պատիւը կշիռքի մը պատկերով կ'երեւակայեմ: Կշիռքը պարապ է ու նժարները հաւասար. մենք մեր գործունէութեամբ կը լեցնենք այդ կշիռքի երկու նժարները: Այդ նժարները կը ցոլացնեն թէ որքանով կը յարգենք մեր երդումը:

Հիմա արդէն գիտեմ, որ այդ երդումը ոչ միայն խոստում է, այլ՝ գիտակցութիւն եւ պատասխանատւութիւն:
